Types of Burn Injuries and Treatments

After suffering a burn injury, it is important to treat the burn immediately because it can make a huge impact on the severity of the injury. Burn injuries swell up quickly and without proper treatment can cause long-term medical problems.

Be sure to follow these three easy steps after a burn injury:

  1. Stop, drop and roll to stop the flames and prevent further injury.
  2. Remove all burned clothing, cutting or tearing along the burned area if the clothing becomes stuck to the body.
  3. Remove jewelry, belts or other articles over any burned areas or around the neck.

The recovery time for a burn injury depends on the severity of the injury. There are several degrees of burn injuries, ranging from minor to the most serious, based on the amount of damage caused to the skin, tissue and bone.

There are three main types of burn injuries, based on their severity:

First-Degree Burns

A first-degree burn causes damage to the top layer of the skin. These types of injuries are usually minor and result in red, non-blistered skin that can be painful to the touch. Treatment includes applying cool, fresh water to the burn and covering it with a clean cloth or non-adhesive bandage. First-degree burns typically heal quickly without any further treatment or hospitalization.

Second-Degree Burns

A second-degree burn causes damage to the first two layers of the skin. These types of injuries usually show some blistering or thickening of the skin, appearing red and glossy. Treatment includes applying cool, fresh water for 10 to 15 minutes, and drying the area with a clean cloth or covering it with a sterile gauze. It is important to not break any blisters or apply any ointments which can cause infection. Second-degree burns require medical attention due to the significant pain they can cause. Victims of second-degree burns may need skin grafts to cover the burned areas.

Third-Degree Burns

A third-degree burn causes damage to all the layers of the skin, permanently destroying tissue. These types of injuries are the most severe because they reach the bones, muscles and tendons. These burns appear thick, leathery and white, black or yellow in color. Treatment includes covering the burn lightly with a clean cloth or sterile gauze, elevating the burned area higher than the victim’s head having the victim sit up if his or her face is burned to help prevent possible breathing issues.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), serious burn injuries should only be treated by a trained medical professional. Although third-degree burns may be painless at first, they require immediate medical attention. Skin grafts, physical therapy and plastic surgery are usually required in many cases to regain appearance and the use of movement that was limited by the burn injury.

Complications After a Burn Injury

Deep or widespread burn injuries can lead to significant complications causing serious illness or death. Burn complications can happen directly from the burn wound or from the body’s inability to properly recover during the treatment process.

Complications after a burn injury can include:

  • Infections – When the skin is severely damaged or dead, it leaves the body vulnerable to airborne infections such as bacteria or fungi. The use of breathing tubes and catheters can also result in respiratory infections causing severe flu or pneumonia. Most damaging of all, there is a risk of sepsis, resulting in a life-threatening infection that travels through the bloodstream and can lead to organ failure and death.
  • Blood clots or low blood volume – Burns can significantly damage blood vessels, resulting in low blood volume caused by excessive fluid loss. In the most severe cases, having low blood volume can affect the heart’s ability to pump blood properly throughout the body. Blots clots can also happen in the limbs when a burn victim remains on bed rest unmoved for a long period of time. This leads to an interference in normal blood flow, resulting in clots in the veins.
  • Breathing problems – Respiratory problems including lung damage can occur as a result of inhaling hot air or smoke after a burn injury. Burn complications can make breathing difficult, resulting in shortness of breath.
  • Bone and joint pain – Burns can cause significant tissue scarring over injured skin, resulting in decreased mobility and pain in the bones and joints. As skin heals over an affected area, it shortens and tightens, making it difficult to move or lift affected body parts.
  • Low body temperature –  When the skin is injured, the body starts to lose heat because the skin helps to control the body’s temperature. Having low body temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – Severely burned victims can develop emotional and psychological trauma from the injury causing anxiety and depression. Both scarring and disfigurement in particular can result in self-esteem and self-worth issues. Burn victims often have to undergo extensive therapy to help deal with the psychological effects of their injuries.

Burn injuries can require extensive, ongoing treatment and the complications that can occur after an injury can be just as life-changing and traumatic. Liability for Burn Injuries

An Albany burn injury attorney can help by investigating your burn, determining who is liable and pursuing the compensation needed as you recover from your injuries.

Parties that can be held liable after a burn injury include:

  • Landlords or property owners – Landlords can be liable for unsafe building practices. They must make sure their buildings have the most up-to-date fire alarm systems and fire extinguishers and that there are no stored items that could potentially be flammable and start a fire.
  • Companies or business owners – Companies can be held responsible if a burn injury occurs on their property. They must make sure their workplaces are safe and that any chemicals used are properly stored and labeled.
  • Product manufacturers – Product manufacturers must make sure their products are safe to use and do not have any potential hazards such as overheating that can cause an explosion and lead to a fire.
  • Reckless or negligent individuals – A single individual or more than one individual can be held liable for causing burn injuries if he or she acted in a negligent or reckless manner and this led to your injury.

If you or someone you love suffered from a burn injury as a result of another party’s negligent behavior, he or she can be held legally responsible for any losses. An Albany burn injury lawyer may be able to file a claim against the negligent party.

Statute of Limitations for a Burn Injury

In Georgia, there are different deadlines for a burn injury claim depending on the type of claim you want to file. You can file a workers’ compensation claim if you sustain any burn injuries at work. There is a 30-day deadline to report the injury to your employer and if you miss the deadline, you may lose the right to file a workers’ compensation claim. The statute of limitations for filing a workers’ compensation claim is one year from the date of the injury. If you fail to file within the time limit, you will lose the right to do so.

If your burns were not a result of a workplace injury, you may be able to file a personal injury claim. Georgia’s statute of limitations for personal injury claims is two years from the date of the accident. Similar to a workers’ compensation claim, if you do not file within the time limit, you lose the right to file a claim for compensation.
